Request Shipping Details
Sometimes you need precise packaging information -- dimensions, weight, or other shipment-level details -- for inventory sitting at the warehouse. The Request Shipping Details action lets you ask the warehouse team to measure and report this data for specific items. This is particularly useful when you are setting up shipping profiles, creating new product listings, or comparing actual package sizes against what is listed in your selling channels.
How to Request Shipping Details
Follow these steps to submit a shipping details request from the Inventory page:
-
Select the target inventory rows. Use the checkboxes to select the rows you need packaging information for. You can select one row or several at once, depending on how many items you need measured.
-
Open Request Actions. Click the Request Actions dropdown at the top of the inventory table and choose Request Shipping Details.
-
Enter quantities and details. For each selected row, specify the quantity you want details on and add any notes that might help the warehouse team understand exactly what you need. For example, you might note that you need both individual unit dimensions and master carton dimensions, or that you want the weight measured with and without packaging.
-
Submit the request. Click Submit to send your request to the warehouse. The team will measure the requested items and provide the information back to you.
When to Use This Action
Requesting shipping details is helpful in several common scenarios:
- New product listings. When listing a product for the first time on a selling channel, you often need accurate dimensions and weight to calculate shipping costs and set customer expectations.
- Shipping profile updates. If your carrier rates are based on dimensional weight, having accurate measurements ensures you are not overpaying or undercharging for shipping.
- Discrepancy investigation. When actual shipping costs differ from estimates, requesting fresh measurements can help you identify whether your listed dimensions are out of date.
- FBA requirements. Amazon has specific packaging and labeling requirements that depend on product dimensions. Having accurate data helps you stay compliant and avoid FBA fee surprises.
Tips for Better Results
Be as specific as possible in your notes. If you need the warehouse to measure items in a particular way -- for example, measuring the item inside its retail packaging versus outside of it -- include that detail. Clear instructions reduce the number of back-and-forth exchanges and help you get the data you need on the first pass.
If you are requesting details for a large number of items, consider batching your requests by product category or size range. This makes it easier for the warehouse team to work through them efficiently.
Tracking Your Request
After submitting, your request will appear on the Requested Details page. You can check back there to see when the warehouse has completed the measurements and provided the information. Once fulfilled, the details will be available for you to review and use in your listings or shipping profiles.
