Request Disposal

When inventory is damaged, expired, unsellable, or simply no longer worth the cost of storage, the Request Disposal action lets you instruct the warehouse to discard those units. This is a permanent action, so it is important to approach disposal requests carefully and verify your quantities before submitting.

How to Request Disposal

Follow these steps to submit a disposal request from the Inventory page:

  1. Select the rows to dispose. Use the checkboxes on the inventory table to select the items you want disposed of. Take care to select only the rows that truly need to be discarded.

  2. Open Request Actions. Click the Request Actions dropdown at the top of the table and choose Request Disposal.

  3. Set disposal quantities carefully. For each selected row, enter the number of units you want the warehouse to dispose of. This is the most critical step in the process. Double-check every quantity before proceeding, because disposal is not easily reversible. Once the warehouse discards the items, they cannot be recovered.

  4. Add notes and context. Include any relevant information that helps the warehouse team understand why these items are being disposed of. For example, you might note that the items are damaged from transit, past their expiration date, or have been recalled by the manufacturer. Clear context helps the warehouse handle the disposal appropriately and maintain accurate records.

  5. Submit the request. Click Submit to send the disposal request to the warehouse. The team will process the disposal according to your instructions.

When to Request Disposal

Disposal is appropriate in several situations, including:

  • Damaged goods. Items that arrived at the warehouse with damage that makes them unsellable or unsafe to ship to customers.
  • Expired products. Consumable items that have passed their expiration date and can no longer be sold.
  • Recalled products. Items that have been recalled by the manufacturer and cannot legally be sold or shipped.
  • Cost-of-storage decisions. Slow-moving inventory where the ongoing storage fees outweigh the potential revenue from eventual sale.
  • Defective returns. Customer returns that have been inspected and determined to be unsellable.

Important Warnings

Disposal is not easily reversible. Once the warehouse processes a disposal request and discards the units, those items are gone. There is no undo button. Before submitting, verify that you are disposing of the correct items and the correct quantities.

Review quantities line by line. It is easy to accidentally enter the wrong number when you are working quickly. Take a moment to go through each row and confirm the disposal count matches your intent.

Consider alternatives first. Before disposing of inventory, think about whether there are other options. Could the items be sold at a discount? Returned to the supplier? Donated? Disposal should be a last resort when no other viable path exists.

Document your reasoning. Use the notes field to explain why the items are being disposed of. This creates a record that can be helpful for accounting purposes, insurance claims, or future reference when reviewing your inventory history.

Tracking Your Request

After submitting, your disposal request will appear on the Requested Disposals page. You can monitor its progress there to confirm when the warehouse has completed the disposal. Keeping an eye on the request status ensures you have a clear audit trail for all disposed inventory.
